Tim was born and raised in Litchfield, MN, which is about as far from the ocean as you can get. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a Nuclear Machinist Mate in the submarine force. It is through the Navy where he finally discovered the ocean and scuba diving while serving on the islands of Oahu and Guam.
During his early years in Guam, Tim spent most of his free time progressing through scuba training, eventually becoming a scuba instructor. It was not until he heard someone talking about the inner peace and tranquility found while freediving that he thought “I need some of that”. After several months and an intro to freediving class, Tim found himself describing freediving as “competitive relaxation”. He quickly put his new freediving skills to good use through spearfishing, giving him an excuse to be in the water.
Moving back to Oahu, Tim sought to improve his freediving skills, expanding his knowledge and abilities through the PFI intermediate and advanced freediver courses. PFI’s commitment to safety and their building block approach to skills aligned with the leadership skills the Navy had instilled in him, making Tim quickly realize his desire to be a part of the PFI organization as a freediving instructor.
When not freediving or spearfishing, Tim can be found sailing, teaching scuba, or taking photos while closed-circuit rebreather diving.
Tim is also a professional photographer and quite often his passion for freediving and photography mix as evidenced by many photos on this site.

U.S. Special Forces, Red Bull extreme athletes, big wave surfers, Tom Cruise, David Blaine, Margot Robbie, and James Cameron. What do they all have in common? When they needed the world’s top freediving instruction, they made one call--to Kirk Krack, founder of PFI. When you won’t settle for anything but the best in your freediving education, you have one choice: Kirk and his team of first-rate professionals. Experience matters. Since our formation in 2000, PFI instructors have taught more than 10,000 people just like you to freedive safer, longer, and deeper. Whether you’re new to freediving or you’re an experienced water enthusiast, we are the only source you need for freediver courses, instructor certification, elite specialized training, and competition events. We are on a single-minded mission to give you the most innovative scientific and training information coming out of the sport today. PFI has formed educational alliances with DAN (Divers Alert Network) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors). Through our alliances, we have helped both DAN and NAUI increase their knowledge and skills in freediving-related rescues, response times, and emergency medical services (EMS) care.
We believe in quality over quantity. Grabbing the biggest market-share of the industry has never interested us. That’s why our instructor certifications are uncompromising, and our rigorous safety standards and protocols continue to evolve with one thing in mind: your well-being. When you feel safe in the water, you’ll be blown away by what you can achieve. Taking a course with us means a PFI Instructor will be within 15ft/5m of you on every single dive. When you come to the surface, you’ll be coached through your recovery with the calm, relaxed, confident state of mind that our instructors convey throughout all of their teachings. The PFI dive mindset gets results. PFI-trained divers have set 23 world records and dozens of national records. However, freediving is more than a competition—it’s a journey inward to see what you’re made of, to discover the potential inside yourself, and infuse it into your whole life, both in and out of the water.
Whether we are diving with humpback whales in Tonga for GoPro, working with doctors and scientists who specialize in hyperbaric chamber studies, anesthesia, sports medicine, and kinesiology to further our understanding and advancement of the sport, playing with dolphins during a PFI Intermediate Freediver course in Kona, or making new friends and setting records at our annual competition in Grand Cayman, our water tribe never stops exploring. Come join us--the water’s waiting for you.
